Weatherforecast Day 7 – 27.06.2026

Another hot day with south wind to finish things up…

Synopsis: The Pyrenees remain between a massive ridge and heatdome extending from Northern Africa over France to Germany and a quasi-stationary trough over the Celtic Sea, leading to persisting and slightly increasing winds from sector south-southwest.

A picture to sum up the 2026 X-Pyr: Widespread anomalies of 10°-15°C above the climate mean temperature at approx. 1500 MASL. ECMWF IFS forecast for 27.6.2026 14:00 LT, visualised by tropicaltidbits.com. NB: the center of the pink blob was much closer to the Pyrenees by the start of the week.

Details: Weather character remains unchanged: Hot and sunny. A few clouds in the morning are possible in the western Pyrenees as well as some thin cirrus. Insolation along the remaining course-line remains un-restricted. Temperatures remain in the 35°C-range in the flats and the 0°C-isotherme over Andorra is around 4700 MASL.

Thermals:
Again the airmass allows potentially thermals with a top of over 4000 MASL in the high mountains of the Catalan Pyrenees. In the lower mountains, thermal tops of 2000 – 2300 MASL are forecasted. As always, the development of usable thermals takes a while, before 12-13:00 LT only in the high mountains above 2000 MASL a favorable gradient can establish. As so often with southerly winds, the French side sees a more complex stratification with a persisting inversion around 1500 MASL, especially in the lower valleys where the south wind doesn’t get through.

Another summary of the week: Thermal forecast for the Catalan Pyrenees for 27.6.2026 with cloud base around 4000 MASL in the afternoon – one more time.

Wind:
…remains the main issue on this last day of the 2026 X-Pyr. Strong southerly winds dominate the course-line. Above 2000 MASL, the wind is already well-present in the morning, with the strongest zones (40-50 km/h) triggered by foehny downslope acceleration in the upper levels of the French valleys. The Spanish and Catalan mountains and hills remain better sheltered in the forenoon and see around 25-35 km/h at 2000 MASL during the afternoon. The exception to this is the area of the foothills around Girona/Figueres. Here, winds are accelerated and can reach 30-35 km/h at 1000 MASL and reaching gusts at the surface in the same range. In this area, winds can locally get deflected towards the west, especially along the southern foothills, while constant and strong winds form plain south persist along the mountain crest around La Jonquera.

Outlook:
Watertemperature of the Med seems with 23.5°C still rather ok, but it remains very uncertain if it will provide enough cooling after crossing the Pyrenees during this exceptional heat-wave!!!

Weather forecast Day 6 – 26.06.2026

Again, more of the same: Heat, sun and southwind.

Synopsis: The Atlantic low moves slowly towards the Celtic Sea, the heat dome over the Pyrenees remains quasi-stationary. Over Spain and the Pyrenees, a moderate to strong flow from sector south-southwest remains active.

Details: Sunny weather prevails. Temperatures remain extraordinary high with maximas around 32 to 36°C in the flats, in some French valleys even 38°C are possible. It’s the first day where there the models show a significant movement in the 0°C-isotherme: It’s climbing from 4300 to 4800 MASL during the day.

Thermals: With the persisting south wind, the thermic stratification of the atmosphere quite complex. Multiple isothermic layers and inversions are to be expected until noon. Especially in France, a strong inversion is forecasted around 1700 MASL, most likely surviving the whole day. In Spain, the inversions are less pronounced. In the Central Pyrenees and higher mountains (Around Añeto, and towards Andorra), a stubborn and rather stable layer remains below 1600-1900 MASL. In the foothills and the Catalan Pyrenees, a quite good gradient is establishing towards noon which seems much better at lower levels than in the higher mountains.
Summarized, in general good thermals can be expected in altitudes above 2000 MASL from noon onwards, potentially reaching again a cloudbase of 4000 MASL. Below, 2000 MASL, rather good thermals can establish during the afternoon in the Catalan mountains with a cloudbase of around 3700-4000 MASL around Andorra and Puigmal and around 2800 in the foothills. Some thermals are also possible between 1000-17000 MASL in the French Valleys, but they are most likely not able to break through the inversion above.
However, thermals are most likely strongly affected by the wind and often disorganised or ruptured.
Overdevelopments don’t seem to be significant tomorrow, with most models showing little to none precipitation signals. The highest risk for Overdevelopments remains along the convergence of the foehny south wind with northerly valley winds in France, probably affecting the area around TP 4, Pic du Midi Bigorre and the direct line towards TP 5.

Wind:
The southerly wind remains active but it’s strength is modelled a bit lower than today. Nonetheless, there is a rather clear foehn-signal on the French side of the Pyrenees, especially at layers above 2000 MASL. Below, the aforementioned inversion can block the south wind and allowing a thermic valley wind up to approx. 1600 MASL.
In Spain, the south wind is present at altitudes above approx. 18000 MASL in the morning with lower altitudes remaining rather calm- During the day, the wind gets mixed down and combined with the thermic wind systems, widespread moderate to strong south wind will establish in most altitudes.
In areas with venturi effects, gap flow or downslope wind effects, windspeed can reach up to 40, locally up to 50 km/h, otherwise reaching about 25-35 km/h at 2000-3000 MASL.
In the flats of Figueres, the Tramuntaña remains blocked by the south wind, in this area windspeed around 40 km/h at 1000 MASL are possible.

Saturday is still dominated by south wind, quite likely stronger than tomorrow. Still hot.

Weatherforecast Day 5 – 25.06.2026

The return of the south wind. All the while, sun, heat, morning stability and overdevelopments remain to be dealt with.

Synopsis: With the Atlantic low reaching Spain, the wind over the Pyrenees turns to south and is increasing. Geopotential over the central and eastern Pyrenees remains still rather high.

Details: Once more, a sunny and hot day can be expected. Temperatures remain around 35-40°C in the flats (ca. 36°C in Figueres), 0°C-isotherme still at 4500 MASL. Insolation is pretty much undisturbed until the formation of diurnal clouds in the afternoon.

Thermals:
In the widespread overheated airmass, the gradients remain very small in the lower layers for the first half of the day. The inversion layer is expected to be somewhat higher than the days before and is forecasted around 1500 – 2000 MASL. Above, gradients are better and allow thermals starting earlier. However, the southerly winds start to advect around slightly warmer air at altitudes from 1500 to 2500 MASL, which can dampen the thermals even above the inversion until noon.
Nonetheless, a widespread good gradient can establish on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees above 1500 MASL and thermal tops of 4000 MASL are again possible. On the French side of the Pyrenees, the warming at mid-altitudes due to the south wind is more pronounced, leading to a stubborn inversion layer remaining at around 1500-2000 MASL.
Overdevelopments remain possible and can be problematic. With the change to southerly winds, the convergence zones leading to these overdevelopments shift to the north. Especially the French side of the Pyrenees shows across different models overdevelopments and showers in the later part of the afternoon. The Spanish shows only little risk for overdevelopments in the model, but some isolated towers can not be ruled out.

Winds:
The main factor influencing flying on Thursday will be the increasing south wind. In the forenoon, winds in the central, eastern and northern parts will probably still be rather calm on layers below 1500-2000 MASL. Higher ridges, as well as the western parts will already see moderate south winds in the forenoon, quickly picking up during the day.
In the lower mountains, and most of the Spanish Pyrenees, the overlapping of thermic valley wind systems and the synoptic forced south winds can create strong winds and very rough conditions from noon onwards.
On the French side, it is possible that some valley will develop rather strong northerly valley winds in the lowest altitudes, while at higher altitudes (above 2000 MASL) moderate to strong is present. Other valleys probably see the valley wind completely overruled by the south wind.
For the last miles between TP 6 and the goal, the southerly wind is completely overruling the classic northerly Tramuntaña, but the strength of the southerly wind is increasing quickly in the afternoon: Countering one bad with another doesn’t necessary result in a good thing…
In the afternoon, winds at 3000 MASL are forecasted to be around 30-40 km/h east of Castejon de Sos, and 40-50 west of it. At 2000 MASL, local accelerations can also lead to 35-50 km/h along ridges or above the inversion layer in France.

Outlook:
Strong southwind prevailing on Friday and Saturday, with Friday looking slightly better than Saturday. Thermal conditions remain rather similar, but the wind is reducing the usability of the thermals significantly.

Weather forecast Day 4 – 24.6.2026

Copy&Paste? Hot, sunny and -once established- good thermals with a high cloudbase. Overdevelopments are to be expected in a similar pattern as today.

Synopsis:
Without surprise, the heat-dome is persisting over the Pyrenees. At the upper levels, the geopotential height is slightly decreasing, while at the surface level, the high pressure is centered far north east of the area, leading to the persisting easterly barrier-jet in the lower layers of the French Pyrenees.

Details:
Hot and sunny weather. Some thin cirrus cloud can move over the Pyrenees, but they shouldn’t significantly impact insolation. Temperatures are not changing significantly and can again easily reach 35°C+ in the flats. 0°C-isotherme remains around 4500 MASL.

Thermals:
For those who are not fortunate enough to start in the high mountains, a rather good gradient will allow thermals to from already during the forenoon, starting around 11:00 LT. In the middle and low mountains, an inversion around 1500 MASL is present, which is only disappearing towards 12:00 LT. In the afternoon, again widespread good gradients with good thermals and cloud base around 4100 MASL in the high mountains and around 3700 MASL over the Spanish foothills are forecasted. During the afternoon, the best climb rates are still in the layers around 3000 MASL, however the gradient in the lower promises slightly better climb rates below 2500 MASL than today.
Again overdevelopments in the second half of the afternoon are possible and are most likely in a similar pattern as today. Areas favorable for overdevelopment are convergence zones of northeasterly winds with the valley winds and areas with slightly more humidity.

Winds:
Except the thermic valley wind systems, easterly winds still prevail for most of the course line. Their strength is strongly dependent of the location. In the lower layers along the French foothills, the easterly wind can be moderate, locally even strong. In higher altitudes, the easterly flow is a bit weaker and overlapped by thermic effects, deflecting the winds more towards northeast. Nonetheless, the area around TP 5 could be influenced by quite significant headwind. In the Spanish Foothills, the wind is strongly overlapped (and in the afternoon blocked) by the thermic wind systems. The northeasterly flow at higher altitudes pushes the convergence zone along the main spine probably slightly to the south.
Generally, windspeeds are forecasted to be around 30-35 km/h in the lowest layers of the French foothills and around 10-25 km/h in the rest of the areas.

Outlook:
With the approach of the Atlantic low, wind will turn to south on Thursday, leading to an onset of slightly foehny conditions. First, only the western parts of the Pyrenees are affected, during the day the south wind is picking up also towards the western regions.
With the convergence being pushed to the north, the zones being most prone to thermic overdevelopments are also moving more towards into France. The low can also trigger some showers and thunderstorms towards noon over Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarra, but these developments shouldn’t affect the athletes.
Generally, flying conditions remain good with a high cloud base, but becoming more and more rough during the day due to the south wind. Friday and Saturday remain under the spell of these southerly winds and some tricky foehn effects on the French side.


Weather forecast Day 3 – 23.6.2026

More of the same: Heat, high cloudbase, thunderstorms. Some changes in the prevailing wind directions can lead to headwind in the French part of the route.

Synopsis:
The upper level ridge and the subsequent heat-dome remain dominating. The synoptic changes towards Day 3 are marginal, but have astonishing effects to the flow pattern along the Pyrenees. The southerly winds are (finally) shutting down, even over the lower Euskadi hills. Instead a East-north-easterly flow settles in, which is much more relevant on the northern side of the Pyrenees.

Details:
Hot conditions with lots of insolation in the forenoon persist. Temperatures are again widespread soaring to 35-40°C in the lowest altitudes, 0°C-isotherme remains around 4500 MASL.

Thermals:
The morning inversion is again rather strong, with a top around 1500 MASL. In the lower hills between TP 1 Larun and TP 2 Villanua, the gradient is developing only slowly, taking probably until around 12:00 LT until consistent thermals below 1500 MASL are established. In the high mountains, gradients and thermal activity should develop already in the forenoon, approx. 2h earlier than in the lower layers.
In the afternoon, cloudbase is again well above 4000 MASL in the high mountains and around 2500 MASL in the lower mountains between TP1 and TP2.
Again, overdevelopments and thunderstorms are expected to form during the afternoon, mostly affecting the central Pyrenees around Añeto. The trigger for the overdevelopments seems to be convergences of the northeasterly winds with the southerly valley wind systems. Therefore, all the areas north of the main spine (mainly the French Pyrenees) are much less affected by the overdevelopments than the Spanish side. The thunderstorms are moving with the upper-level flow towards the south-west.

Winds:
While the hills of the Basque country see (for once) a rather calm morning and forenoon (south wind is shutting down), there is already a pronounced easterly flow established in the early day along the French foothills of the Pyrenees. In combination with the thermic wind systems, this leads to winds spilling over the cols and passes from the north towards the Spanish valleys, leading to the aforementioned convergences in the afternoon. The mountains between TP 1 and TP 2 are expected to be more and more influenced by these overspilling northeasterly winds during the afternoon. The higher mountains are less affected by these overspilling-effects, but there is nonetheless around 15-30 km/h of easterly winds at 3000 – 4000 MASL expected, especially over France. Over Spain, the upper level winds are more turned towards north and slightly weaker – but here, the overdevelopments are probably much more important than the upper level wind patterns.

Outlook:
Wednesday is still expected to look quite similar to Tuesday. On Thursday, Day 5, the Atlantic low reaches the most western parts of the Iberian Peninusla, leading to the onset of a moderate, probably locally strong, southerly flow and increased instability. This southerly flow will probably remain active for the rest of the race, with the details (amount of humidity, instability and upper level dynamic forcings) still a bit unclear between the models.

Weather forecast Day 2 – 22.06.2026

A slow start followed by great flying conditions – spiced with some overdevelopment.
With the persisting heat wave and weakening south wind, generally good flying conditions with a very high cloudbase can be expected. However stubborn morning stability and overdevelopments with thunderstorms around Añeto will quite likely limit the flying window.

Synopsis:
A ridge with very warm subtropic air is dominating the weather. With it’s axis directly over the western Pyrenees, the Iberian Peninsula und the most northwestern parts of the Pyrenees sees persisting south winds while the higher mountains from TP 2 eastwards are under a light to moderate northerly flow.

Details:
Hot temperature and strong insolation remain present until the late afternoon. Temperatures at low altitudes are again in the 35-40°C range, 0°C-isotherme is around 4500 MASL.

Thermals:
As a result of the heat present, during the night an isothermic layer below 2000 MASL forms, which is dampening thermal development in the forenoon. Mountains above 2000 MASL are much more promising for thermals before noon. It will probably take until 12-13:00 LT until a continuous good gradient is established in the layers below 2000 MASL, but once it is there thermals with a top of up to 5000 MASL (!!!) are expected. The best climbing rates remain however in the layers above 2000 MASL.
Around the Area of TP 4 Añeto, the models show some overdevelopments and thunderstorms towards the evening. The areas more to the west (towards TP 3) are less affected by overdevelopments. Also the French parts are most likely less affected. Because of the dry boundary layer, it is possible that the models are overestimating the risk for thunderstorms, however if they materialise, the risk for strong gusts in their vicinity is very real.

Wind:
While the lower mountains west of TP 2 remain in the influence of moderate southerly winds, the high mountains of the Central Pyrenees see only weak winds (5-15 km/h at 3000-4000 MASL). Valley wind systems can become moderate to strong and as mentioned there are strong to severe gusts possible around thunderstorms.

Outlook:
The general pattern remains similar on Tuesday and Wednesday. Slightly decreasing geopotential heigth at upper levels and slightly more humid boundary layer lead probably to earlier thermals than on Monday, but increasing thunderstorm-activity towards the evening.

Weather forecast Day 1 – 21.6.2026

Hot and windy sunday!

Much of Europe, including the Pyrenees is under the spell of an intense heat wave at the moment. You’d think hot and sunny would imply great flying conditions, but the first day of the X-Pyr is always a bit special and this edition is no exception. Strong south winds will make flying conditions very difficult.

Synopsis:
An Atlantic low far out over the Azores is deepening and amplifying the ridge over western Europe, leading to an Omega-Pattern. This amplifying is connected with the advection of hot air from the subtropics and northern Africa, subsequently leading to an intense heat and a surge of increasing south wind over Spain.
At lower layers, the southerly winds get deflected along the Pyrenees, forming a “barrier-jet-like” south-easterly flow. With the decreasing mountain height of the Euskadi hills, the south-easterly winds get channeled over the Basque Country, are accelerated and spilling over from Spain into France, blocking the Sea breeze long into the afternoon.

Details:
With the effects of the south wind probably not yet established, the early morning can see some low clouds over Hondarribia, however they will disappear quickly. With intense insolation and the onset of weak south winds at the ground, temperatures will quickly increase and reach maximas around 38 to 40°C in the afternoon.

Thermals:
An inversion between 1000 and 2000 MASL will be present until around 12:00 LT, disappearing later on. The thermal top in the areas close the sea is expected around 1600 to 2200 MASL, with slightly higher topography, towards TP 2, theoretically even 3000 MASL are possible with a good looking gradient – however any thermal development will quite likely be very disorganised and ruptured by the wind.

Winds:
At 1000 MASL, windspeeds between 35 and 45 km/h are forecasted with the peak in between 10:00 and 12:00 LT. During the afternoon, the winds are decreasing slightly, but still remaining around 30-40km/h at 1500 MASL. The strong south wind is also present – and even stronger in the upper layers up to 4000 MASL, but these altitudes are probably out of reach on Sunday…

Outlook:
The south wind is weakening significantly towards Monday and only remain present with moderate strength in the vicintity of TP 1. The higher mountains see weak northerly winds and cloud base at 4000+ MASL and some overdevelopments with thunderstorms especially in the central and eastern Pyrenees. This pattern is persisting until mid-week. Towards the end of the week, the Atlantic trough is closing in slowly, quite possibly leading to increasing south-west winds and instability.

Meteo Day 7 (28.6.): A finish in rain

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

Synopsis:
The cut-off low west of Spain, that was dominant during the last days, gets joined by another trough and sweeps over the Pyrenees.

Castejon:
The morning is already cloudy, showers and possibly violent thunderstorms move in quickly from the Ebro Valley. The most intense precipitations and stormcells move away to the north in the afternoon, but further showers are still likely. However, some flyable windows, probably even with local, low-based thermals are possible in the second half of the day. Winds turn from south to westerly directions.

The passage of the cut-off is associated with a rather active cold front, leading to widespread and intense storms. Forecasted precipitation-rates for Saturday 1300 LT, based on AROME-Data from meteociel.fr.

Nuria:
The early hours of the morning could still offer some windows with sunny spells, however the southwind will probably be too strong for flying. During forenoon, clouds and storms move in from southwest, with the most intense phase around noon.
The second half of the afternoon could again see increasing conditions with sunny spells and thermals – however isolated showers will remain possible until the evening. After the passing of the thunderstorms, winds will turn to west and decrease compared to the morning hours – but probably still keep strengths of 25-35 km/h. In the mountains south of TP5, the wind will remain stronger than north of it.

Goal:
In the flats of Figueres, the forenoon remains dry, but isolated showers are already possible along the coast. Towards noon, intense and violent showers and storms pass over the area. Once they passed, the sky clears, thermals are possible – but the wind will most likely remain too strong for flying (first westerly, the towards the evening probably a rather rough Tramuntana).

Big respect to all athletes who are still on the route and keep on pushing in this very difficult weather situation on Saturday!

Meteo Day 6 (28.6.): Southwind, but this time for real

Synopsis:
With the cut-off low moving slowly into Spain, the southerly flow over all altitudes increases.

Area of Castejon:
During forenoon, conditions are still rather smooth but stable. When thermals start to develop around noon, the south wind will increase and reach around 20-40 km/h at 2500 and 40 to 50 km/h at 3000 MASL. The thermal conditions itself still look rather good with a forecasted cloudbase reaching up to 4000 MASL. Overdevelopments are not that much of a problem anymore, as the clouds are blown quickly into France, there are little to none shower signals in the model data.

Area of Valle Nuria:
The Vallies around Andorra see a similar situation regarding wind and thermals as the central Pyrenees around Castejon. On the ridges in the line of Valle Nuria/Puigmal, the southerly winds will probably stronger, even in lower altitudes. The same is valid for the mountains east of TP5.

While the thermal gradients and climbing rates still look ok, the increasingly southerly wind will complicate things quite a lot, especially at higher flight levels… Forecast for the Catalan Pyrenees by XCTherm.com

Goal:
The flats around Figueres and direction goal will remain tricky. Seabreeze and very stable conditions will make progress by flying difficult. Again, it seems like the southerly winds will overrule the northerly Tramuntana, making for a stiff seabreeze. If there are any thermals at all, they are most likely to be found in the later afternoon.

Outlook:
The last day will unfortunately bring rather bad weather conditions. The early morning will probably still be dry around Castejon and eastwards, but showers and thunderstorms are moving in during the forenoon and spreading towards the east. Around Goal, rain will set in during the afternoon.

Meteo Day 5 (27.6.): Same same, but different?

Synopsis:
Cut-off low moving to the Strait of Gibralter, while a (very shallow) ridge remains over the Pyrenees. The advection of warm and moist air in lower levels continues.

Windsituation at 2000 MASL on Thursday 1300 LT; generally weak winds from southerly directions prevail. Thermic windsystems dominate between TP4 and TP5. ECMWF-forecast by windy.com

Area Castejon de Sos:
Not only on a large scale, also in the details Thursday looks rather similar than today. In terms of wind, there will be again mostly southerly winds of moderate strength within the thermal layer. Regarding insolation and thermals, there will be again some high clouds crossing the mountain range during the night, but they should move away and not hamper insolation. It seems that the airmass is slightly less stable in the morning than today, so it is forecasted that the thermals start slightly earlier than today.
Some Cu clouds will devlop into the earlier afternoon, locally growing into TCU, but while some thermal forecasts show rather high risk for showers, the probabilistic models show a rather low (5-20%) chance for rain around Castejon.
However it is likely that there will be some shaded areas from the middle of the afternoon onwards, probably slowing down flying conditions a bit and making things a bit more complicated.
Cloudbase is forecasted around 3500 in the high mountains and 2800 MASL in the foothills.

Risk for rain (>0.1mm/h) for Thursday afternoon, 1500 LT. The Castejon area sees only small blue dots, while the risk around TP5 and the area of Andorra and Font Romeu is higher.

Area Valle de Nuria:
Rather similar conditions as around Castejon with the difference, that the risk for showers is modelled slightly higher. While there are booming conditions in the early afternoon, the later afternoon will get more complicated because of the growing shadows and probably again some thunderstorms.

Goal:
Once you leave TP5 and fly towards goal, the conditions will get increasingly stable. The area from Canigou down to Olot should still provide decent climbs up to around 3000 MASL, but once you get into the foothills, the seabreeze and a much lower base will it make progress much more difficult.
The feared Tramuntana (Northerly winds from France into Spain) in this area doesn’t seem to be very active, but in turn the large scale southerly flow could enhance the seabreeze (there are signs for a wind pattern called “Le marin” in southern France). Anyway airspaces, seabreeze and the stable conditions around Figueres will make for a challenging final for sure.


Outlook:
Significantly increasing south winds on Friday will make flying conditions more difficult, but weather around the courseline should remain mostly dry until the evening.
On Saturday, the cut-off low which dominated this week will swing over the Pyrenees, leading to widespread showers and storms moving in during the day.

Meteo Forecast Day 4 (26.6.): Welcome to our dear friend Instability

Synopsis:

The Pyrenees remain between two cut-off lows, one to the east over Italy – slowly filling and with decreasing influence, and one to the Portuguese Atlantic coast, increasing it’s influence over the region. Warm and increasingly moist air from the south is advected into Spain, leading to increased cloudiness and instability.
How strong this advection is and how far it extends into the Pyrenees depends strongly on the position of the Portuguese cut-off low, which is subject to considerable uncertainty.

Area around TP2 (Pyrenees Atlantique):

During the night and early morning, some high level clouds will cross the Pyrenees. They can hinder the solar radiation, but the radiation should be enough to develop thermals in the course of the morning.
The thermal forecast looks similar to today: rather stable conditions in the lower levels, but usable thermals developing just before noon. Rather weak NNE winds should prevail in the thermal layer, while the top of the thermals will reach around 1600-2000 MASL west of TP2 and up to 3000 MASL towards Pic du Midi.
The NNE easterly valley winds will reach around 1500 MASL, above which moderate S to SW flow will prevail (the strength of the wind depends on the large-scale situation and is modelled in a range between 10 and 25 km/h at 2500 MASL).
There will be some overdevelopment, when and where it will start first depends on the model you’re looking at. Likely the area around TP2 will trigger the first showers on the French side.

Spain (Area of Castejon de Sos and towards Catalonia):

Also in the Spanish Pyrenees, some clouds will move through the sky during the early morning and forenoon.
Nevertheless, thermals should develop during the forenoon, reaching peaks around 3000-3500 MASL in the high Pyrenees and around 2600 MASL in the foothills. The lower layers in the foothills are more stable and the thermals will start later, but once developed they’ll offer good climbing rates.Southerly to south-westerly winds of 15 to 25 km/h will prevail, with the possibility of a light WNW tailwind above 2500 MASL.
The likelihood of overdevelopment along the route is also real in Spain, but the airmass is a little drier towards the east, so conditions look a little better towards TP5. Overdevelopment in the eastern parts of the Pyrenees seems to be mainly on the French side of the range and the areas towards the Mediterranean where the airmass offers more moisture.

Once the thermals are in place, the first few hours of flying should be quite fast, before the sky starts to build up…

Outlook:

With the Portuguese cut-off low moving in slowly, the outlook remains very uncertain. Some models show slowly deteriorating conditions with increasing cloudiness and storminess from day to day, while others show decent conditions until midday on Friday.
What does seem certain is that the remnants of the cut-off will pass over the Pyrenees on Saturday, leading to widespread thunderstorms and rain on the final day of the race.


Meteo Day 3 (25.6.): The sandwich

Synopsis:

The Pyrenees lie between a slowly filling, but quasi-stationary, low pressure area over the Mediterranean and a forming low pressure area to the west of Spain. In between, a narrow ridge extends from the western Pyrenees to the North Sea. With the ridge still present, an inversion between 2000 and 2500 MASL is still present, but much weaker than on day 2. Meanwhile, the forming cut-off to the west leads to advection of significantly warmer air into Spain and the Pyrenees at lower levels.
At first glance, the changes on a large scale are small, but in detail the conditions will change significantly between day 2 and day 3, with the wind turning almost 180 degrees in some cases.

French Basque-Country / Pyrenees Atlantique (TP1-TP2):
At least the humidity doesn’t seem to be a big problem anymore – the weather should stay the same all day. However, the wind situation is changing significantly. In the early morning, a strong southerly wind (25-50 km/h) will arrive above 1000 MASL. The warm air associated with this southerly wind will make it very difficult for thermal activity to develop, so the whole of the morning will see fairly stable flying conditions in the lowest altitudes down to about 1200 MASL. Those who are able to take off above the overnight stable layer will see the thermals develop much earlier, but will also have to contend with the rather strong and potentially turbulent southerly wind. This effect is more pronounced the closer you are to the Spanish border.

Once a thermal boundary layer is established in the French valley, it is likely to remain capped around 2000 MASL (probably lower) and moderate (10-25 km/h) valley winds (mostly NNE) will prevail at these altitudes.Due to dynamic effects (decreasing pressure in the Lee of the Pyrenean main chain), the valley winds will be stronger than the – relatively weak – thermal activity would suggest.
Above this cap, we have significant wind shear and the persistent moderate to strong southerly wind.

The French side of the area between TP2 and the Vallee d’Aure (around Pic du Midi) appears to be very complicated with two stacked airmasses; the lower, capped and relatively stable French airmass with northeasterly winds up to about 1500 MASL and the upper, airmass with better thermals but windy conditions due to the southerly wind.However, the southerly wind is modelled to be less strong in this area than to the west of TP2.

Interestingly, above about 3500 MASL, a northerly wind prevails (hence the title “The Sandwich”).

Spanish Pyrenees (Panticosa – Monte Perdido – Boi Taull):

The good news:
Once in Spain, there’s only one air mass to keep you busy. Moderate (15-25 km/h) southerly winds dominate the thermal layer.
The advection of warmer air also delays the start of the thermals in Spain, but there should be developed thermal activity around midday, with good climb rates and a base around 2500, probably up to 3000 MASL.
With these southerly winds, flying conditions will also be quite difficult, but it’s likely to be a little easier and less complicated than on the French side.
However, there seems to be some risk of thunderstorms and showers towards the evening, especially east of the Castejon de Sos area.

The meteo-parapente.com model for the Accous grid point sums it up pretty well:
Lowest stable layer in yellow, middle layer with southerly winds framed in red and the green framed layer with northerly winds above 3000 MASL.

Summary:

It looks like we are in for another complicated day of flying. Different layers of air masses will dominate Tuesday in France: A lower, rather stable layer up to about 1500 MASL with winds from the NNE, a layer with rather strong southerly winds between 1500 and 3000 MASL and a third layer with northwesterly winds above (the last one is rather insignificant for the race). Thermals will develop quite late in the lowest layer.
In Spain, the mountains remain entirely in the middle layer, offering a late start and windy conditions, but with rather good climbing rates.

Outlook:
Wednesday and Thursday are a bit uncertain as it’s really hard to predict what the cut-off to the west of Spain will actually do. At the moment it seems to be less windy, but increasingly stormy.

Meteo Forecast Day 2, 24.6. – France being France?

No offence to any French colleagues! In previous X-Pyr-Races, the French side of the Pyrenees didn’t show off its full potential, but became rather infamous for fog and walking. The big question for Monday: will the clouds disappear? Or will we see another chapter of (assumingly wrong) prejudices about the French Pyrenees?
Let’s elaborate.

Synopsis:
At the surface, the centre of the high-pressure system is moving off to the northeast, which is leading to a gradual decrease in MSLP over the Pyrenees. Meanwhile, at the upper level, a sharp ridge is building over the Bay of Biscay, while the cut-off low over the Med remains stationary. The wind direction is turning from north to east-northeast, which is keeping a northerly component in the lowest layers. The humidity we’re seeing today is stuck in the lowest layers between the French flats and the Pyrenees.

The forecast for Monday morning is for low cloud cover, with a big red area in the centre of the image indicating extended low stratus in the French Basque Country. Data: AROME, meteociel.fr

French Basque-Country:

In the morning, the low stratus covering the Basque country is set to extend. The cloud tops are around 1000-1500m, and the cloud base is pretty low.
The clouds should start to break up during the morning (around 1000 LT), turning into 4-6/8 Cu with the cloud base rising from about 900m to about 1500m. The thermal forecasts aren’t great, but they still show decent climbing rates of around 1-2 m/s.
However, it’s worth noting that weather models can struggle to accurately predict low stratus cloud cover, and there’s a common perception that fog in the French Pyrenees is particularly persistent. This could result in a longer-than-expected transition from cloudy conditions to more favourable thermic conditions.
Wind speeds in the boundary layer are currently between 5 and 15 knots from the east, with a more northerly component the closer you are to the Spanish border.

Spanish Basque-Country:
On the Spanish side, the airmass looks drier, but it’s still capped by an inversion at around 2000 MASL, at least in the lower mountains. The thermal forecasts show better climbing rates and a higher cloud base than on the French side, but also more significantly more wind (NE). Once you reach the higher mountains (>2000 MASL), the winds should be weaker in Spain and veer more towards the east in these regions.

Outlook:
It looks like Tuesday will be a good day for flying, with only a little cloud cover. However, the French side seems to be more stable, with only weak climbing rates and probably some wind from the south-west kicking in during the day. The Spanish air seems to be booming, as shown in the XCTherm forecast below.
