When and why did you start paragliding?
I started flying 5 years ago. I’d always had it in mind, and one day I just had a sudden urge and signed up for a course.
Why have you applied to participate in the X-Pyr?
I like the philosophy of the race. It’s adventure mixed with competition, and it’s done as a team. As someone who’s mostly a solo adventurer, it will be a completely new and exciting experience.
Why are you attracted to hike & fly?
Hike and fly is pure autonomy and freedom. You can embark on countless adventures and trips with just your backpack, which also becomes the most amazing means of transport there is.
What is your greatest sporting success (flying or not flying)?
My best sporting achievements are yet to come.
What excites you most about participating in the X-Pyr?
Teamwork. Being able to overcome all the obstacles that the route and the weather present with the help of my team.
What is your best result in a H&F competition so far?
Third in bivouac mode at the Pyrenees Open.
Have you flown in the Pyrenees before? Do you have a favourite area?
Yes, of course! The deeper and wilder, the better! The Respumoso area, the Balaitus Massif, for example. The Posets-Perdiguero area is wild too!
What does your typical training week consist of?
A mix of aerobics, strength and high-intensity training, and above all, flying as much as possible.
What worries you the most about the event?
Landing after 7 pm on the French side and having nothing to eat…
Personally, how do you feel differently when you participate in H & F races in comparison to XC competitions?
While in an XC competition you are only focused on flying, in an H & F competition many more variables come into play, such as fatigue, complicated landings and take-offs, or quick strategies and decisions.
How do you know your supporter? And have your worked as athlete/supporter before?
When I started paragliding, he was one of those who took me in and mentored me. And he still does. He was my supporter in the Pyrenees and we worked very well together. He has also helped me on more than one tricky flight, both in the Alps and the Pyrenees, from home.
What advice would you ask of the race veterans?
How do you manage to keep your assistants from running off to go home after a couple of days?
Anything else you like to comment?
Thanks to the organisers for the opportunity.
The whole team is going to really enjoy the experience, and I hope we make the people of the Basque Country enjoy it too.
See you in Hondarribia!
