What is your greatest sporting success?
Regarding Hike&Fly, the participation in X-Pyr 2018 certainly holds a special place. Although sports-wise it was not super successful, it was a unique experience. Further highlights in my sporting-career: multiple podium places in Swiss Hike&Fly-competitions and 2 x category winner of the Patrouille des Glaciers (skimountaineering).

When and why did you start paragliding?
I started in 2013, first to facilitate the descents while mountaineering. Quickly, I realised that there is much more possible with this amazing piece of fabric!

What is your mountaineering experience?
As Swiss mountain-guide-aspirant it’s part of my job to professionally guide people in high alpine terrain. For this, a very extensive mountaineering experience is key, and the selection process is rigorous. Furthermore, I have a long list of difficult ascents all over the Alps, including much of the 4000m peaks and the 3 infamous north-faces of Eiger, Matterhon and Grandes Jorasses. I also do regularly skimountaineering-races to keep the routine in moving through high-alpine terrain in a competition-environment.

What does your typical training week consist of?
In average, I’m guiding 2-3 days a week, which serves as my basic endurance training. Add in some high-intensity units, some strength training, some flying and some climbing and here you are…

What are your best and worst sporting memories?
Best: So much different highlights, it’s very difficult to chose one…
Worst: Getting a stomach-flu during X-Pyr 2018…

Why did you choose the X-Pyr?
It’s just an amazing adventure! And I still have an open bill after the 2018 edition…

Have you participated in X-Pyr before? How was it?
Yes, in 2018. It was a very big experience, living through amazing landscapes, great flying and very hard and low moments.

Have you flown in the Pyrenees before? What do you think about them?
Yes. Pyrenees are a very special mountain range. It’s different than the Alps, much more condensed but at the same time much more wild and remote. I like it!

What will your strategy be during the race?
Remain efficient and fast, in the air as well as on the ground and keep the risk managment at a very high level.

What excites you most about the X-Pyr?
Crossing the wild and remote landscapes and travelling from the sea to the heart of the mountains and back!

What scares you the most about the event?
Shitty air and dangerous flying conditions as well as too much walking in case of bad weather.

Why will he/she make a good assistant?
After being my supporter already in the 2018 edition and collecting a lot of knowledge in this sport, Stephanie knows the drill very well and what’s important. Philipp is a very motivated pilot of the X-Alps Academy, he knows the needs of a h&F-Athlete quite well himself!

Anything else you like to comment?

Without these guys we would not have the race.
