When and why did you start paragliding?
I started paragliding seven years ago because I wanted to find another way to come down from the mountains than just running. I’ve always been fascinated by everything that flies, so it quickly made sense to try flying myself. Very quickly, I became passionate about it, especially the adventure side, hike and fly, bivouac, and long-distance challenges.
Why have you applied to participate in the X-Pyr?
After watching three X-Pyr starts, I once promised myself that one day I would try to take part in this incredible race. Since then, as someone from the Pyrenees and a passionate pilot, it has become a dream to finally challenge myself across these mountains. Participating in the X-Pyr would be the ultimate way to combine my love for flying, endurance, and the Pyrenean crossing.
Why are you attracted to hike & fly?
Even after years of flying, I still find it amazing to hike with my paraglider on my back and take off from a summit. I’ve loved running since I was a kid, and I also love flying. Hike and fly lets me combine both passions in the mountains, which is simply incredible.
What is your greatest sporting success (flying or not flying)?
My greatest sporting achievement? A 7-hour, 153 km flight along the northern Pyrenees, flying over my home mountains, the places where I grew up, and almost reaching the Basque Country. Pure thrill and unforgettable views.
What excites you most about participating in the X-Pyr?
What excites me most about participating in the X-Pyr is having the chance to start “at home,” right in the mountains where I train. I’m looking forward to the incredible adventure ahead, and I hope to celebrate at the summit of La Rhune TP1 with friends and family. Being able to share this experience with the people I care about makes it even more special, and I can’t wait for June 21st.
What is your best result in a H&F competition so far?
My best result in a hike & fly competition so far is 2nd place at the Trilogie des Gaves.
Have you flown in the Pyrenees before? Do you have a favourite area?
I’ve mainly flown in the Pyrenees! My favorite area is the Rhune massif, where I train all year round. I also love Panticosa, where I’ve done many bivouac flights, the landscape is simply breathtaking, and flying there feels like a true adventure every time.
What does your typical training week consist of?
Sport is a big part of my life. I train almost every day, around 300 days a year! I love keeping it fun and flexible, going by feel. I run to and from work, head to the mountains for hike & fly sessions with my mini wing, and do plenty of core and strength training. For me, being active isn’t just preparation. It’s a way of life.
What worries you the most about the event?
I’m worried about having a week of rain and very windy conditions.
Personally, how do you feel differently when you participate in H & F races in comparison to XC competitions?
To be honest, I haven’t done many paragliding competitions yet. What I do know is that I love the strategic side of racing for me, it’s like a game, full of challenges and decisions at every turn.
How do you know your supporter? And have your worked as athlete/supporter before?
We don’t have any experience as athlete or supporter. It’s our first time for both of us! The paragliding community is small here in the Basque Country. François has been flying for more years than me and has always taken me under his wing, giving great advice along the way. We share exactly the same vision of free flying and the way we love to fly!
What advice would you ask of the race veterans?
What’s the best spot to grab a drink and celebrate in El Port de la Selva after crossing the finish line?
